Keep On £0.99
Nick Turner – Keep On From: £0.99
Sleep D – Lazin/Mustard From: £0.99Melbourne is RIDICULOUS. Maybe “there’s something in the water” is a bit cliché – but honestly, they breed hip young chaps with a penchant for deep, dusty, funky as hell house music – then, for reasons unknown – send them to us.
Introducing SLEEP D. Formerly ‘Sleepy Dino’; they are Corey and Maryos from Melbourne. They DJ in and around Melbourne (catch them at Brown Alley on Friday 16th September alongside Robag Wruhme, Guti and Tommy For Seven), run a on-point blog/mix site called Butter Sessions and make wonderful wonderful music.
The first cut, ‘Lazin’ oozes melancholy. I think it’s a difficult thing to pack so much of a single emotion into a track, an emotion that is usually at home in a more laid-back genre or tone; whilst still retaining that dance-floor appeal. The boys do it seamlessly here, the soaring organs hark of love lost, while the soul-shaking bottom end and kick provide a vein of optimism that gives the track an infallible feel.
Long time APR friend and fave Matthew Kyle strips the elements of the track to the bare minimum without losing any of it’s raw passion, and adds an almost haunting, eerie element to proceedings. Slowed down, Matt’s take on ‘Lazin’ rumbles along with a constant tension perfect for early-doors or early-hours.
Next up is ‘Mustard’. Corey and Maryos up the tempo, layer together loose percussion around a solid bass complimented with hints of the heartfelt vibe found in ‘Lazin’; creating a rolling, punchy, confident groover of a track.
On remix duty the esteemed James Johnston makes his APR debut. upping the pace again, James brings his trademark house sound to the table – layering and blending elements to create an urgent crescendo that drops into a heavenly break – building again to an all-out frenzy; inhibitions left at the door please…
If this is Sleep D’s mission statement, we don’t think they’ll have too much trouble signing up recruits. Very pleased to add more of Melbourne’s finest to the APR family!
