“Counterfeit Productions” sounds like either a terrible dummy business name for your forgery operation, or maybe a Hip Hop Crew. Attach the phrase to “Audio Parallax Records” and logic lands you with the impression that maybe Counterfeit Productions make re-edits. Yeah, it makes sense don’t it?

If that’s what you were after – apologies – this stuffs as original as it gets.

Counterfeit Productions isNewcastlebased Mark Johnson. For anyone in the know, Mark – as a DJ – was one of the keystone jocks who formed ‘Habit’, the now sadly disbanded Newcastle clubbing institution. His time at habit saw him spinning with the likes of Radio Slave,Dixon, Simon Baker, Lee Burrige, Kenny Hawkes, Manuel Tur and Funk D’Void. He’s an amazing DJ, that’s a given. But as far as Mark’s studio work goes – rubbing shoulders with a list like that seems to have done him no end of favours.

Mark’s tracks sit precariously between Deep House, Nu-Disco and occasionally Techno. I say precariously because trying to pigeon-hole these tracks is like trying to restrain them. They have their own soul, their own direction are they’re strong. Very strong.

Mark is clearly influenced by his peers; perhaps that’s where the word ‘Counterfeit’ in his production moniker comes in. But that’s where the association ends. His tracks are by no means copies; forgeries – these are the real deal. These are hard currency.
