Product Description
dbo is the production alias of Edinburgh’s Davy Brown.
Davy started DJing in 1990 – over twenty years ago. He caught the bug after visiting a night called ‘The Kronk’ in Edinburgh; seeing Barry McKinley and Lel Palfrey play a heady blend of Soul, Deep House and Hip-Hop was the catalyst that started our man’s musical journey.
Once he mastered his trade he quickly gained residencies at places like The Citrus Club where he played alongside such luminaries as Chip E from Trax – and then began playing Yip Yap – one of the most successful nights the city has seen, selling out almost every party with barely any guest DJs involved.
He cites his musical influences as Gareth Sommerville (fellow resident at Yip Yap), Kevin McKay (DJ and owner of Glasgow Underground), Paper Records, Cottam and Mark E. I think that says a lot – you dont get many people claiming to be influenced by a fellow resident. But that’s Davy Brown – two feet firmly on the ground; it’s the music that matters.
We asked dbo to describe his taste in music, and he said “anything deep with soul”. If you asked us to describe his tracks, we’d say that they are deep as hell – but with plenty of soul.
The five tracks that make up CDR range from deep, chugging house (M.u.s.i.c.) to piano-led disco anthems (ACI), and each track tells a story – gives the listener a little more of dbo. These tracks sound very personal, and it’s very clear that 20 years spinning haven’t been in vain. dbo knows how to work a crowd, both behind the decks and in the studio.
