Product Description
NY*AK. The name itself has a certain allure.
“What do the letters stand for? Why the asterisk?” you ask. The origin of the asterisk has something to do with donating dates of birth on family trees, from back in the medieval times. In music, an asterisk denotes when a sustain pedal should be lifted. NY – New York? AK – Alaska? AK as in AK-47? Is it something to do with the three stooges? Nyak nyak nyak…
It leaves the mind thirsty for answers; for clarity.
In reality Andrew Scott, the man behind NY*AK; banged his computer keyboard in frustration one day – and out came NY*AK.
If that’s taken the shine off it a little, we’re not worried. Listen to any of Andrews tracks and we guarantee you’ll be drawn straight back in, but this time – deeper.
NY*AK’s debut four-tracker for Audio Parallax is a sample-laden journey to some of the finer and thoughtful landscapes of house music.
‘The Vulture’ throbs along steadily, led by the spoken word vocal and occasional Rhodes stabs. The listener is locked in to the groove while NY*AK’s trademark organic percussion builds steadily until suddenly a surprise riff drops, instantly turning the track from filler to killer.
Next up – ‘Beatrootsoup’. Equally suited as a set opener or set closer, this track is a brilliant mood setter – thinking man’s music for a thinking man’s dance floor.
‘One Two’ takes us back into familiar territory; one for the heads. A beautifully crafted deep groove, soulful vocal stabs and a flute line that’ll get people off their seats in room two and leave the bar stuff suddenly short of punters to serve…
Lastly we have ‘Better Bitch’. Reminiscent of some of ‘St Germain’s finer moments, the track bubbles along, held lovingly together by jazzy piano stabs and brass.
